Buying a Shearling Jacket is easy, but taking care of it requires a lot of effort. A good quality shearling jacket is quite an investment. Furthermore, it is made up of such fabrics which need a bit more care than other ones. Shearling jackets can be the most durable and timeless piece of clothing in your wardrobe if you take the right care and follow some instructions. Even if you have been asked to take good care of it, suitable care includes the following;
RULE #1; NO WASHING MACHINE!
To be very honest, washing machines are only for those clothes which you grab on daily use. Washing machines usually make the color dull and material more vulnerable even for a regular piece of cloth, so shearling jackets already require extra care. So Never use a washing machine to wash your shearling jacket, even never put any shearling product in a washing machine. All it takes is just one trip to drier, and your precious shearling coat is ruined.
RULE #2 – CLEAN IT OFTENLY!
Never let dirt sit on your jacket for a long time, as it gets adhered to the surface, which can make it difficult to clean it, so keep brushing it frequently. Every time after returning from any outdoor activity where you think you may have encountered dirt, it is best not to let your laziness overcome you and cleaning the dirt off immediately. Otherwise, it will cost you a lot of money and/or effort if you try to do it by yourself.
RULE #3 – KEEP IT AWAY FROM HEAT!
The material of your shearling doesn’t matter in contact with heat; it will get ruined. Always keep your shearling jackets away from all kinds of open flames or any sources that bring you heat. This will damage your jacket’s material, too, along with the shearling details. Not just that, direct exposure to sunlight for a long period can kill your coat. Well, yeah, you are not going to wear this jacket in the sunlight, but you can end up hanging it in a sunny place such as a window, take care of it. Otherwise, your jacket will lose its shine and color at the same time.
RULE #4 – NEVER STORE IN A PLASTIC BAG!
Plastic bags are not only harmful to the environment only, but they’ll also ruin your shearling jackets. If you plan on reserving your jacket for a long time, you should refrain from going with a plastic bag to keep it. Plastic bags do not allow air to pass, and the moisture in them stays trapped, which can damage your jacket completely. You’ll easily find paper or cloth bags which allow products to breathe. Also, never pack your jacket too tightly; it’ll make them stiff and damage the shearling detail.
RULE #5 – KEEP YOUR JACKET IN A BREATHABLE PLACE!
After choosing the perfect bag and loosely packing your jacket, you need to consider another thing while storing your jacket. Never put your shearling jackets in the darkest corner of your jacket because the sun is out; your only companion for winters deserves to be stored in an airy space. Even if you are going to hang it, firstly hang in on a stout hanger, NEVER wrap it around a hook or doorknob, or even jacket rack, unless your jacket has something that’ll help it going to hanging. Secondly, always make sure that the place is airy and not warm.
Rule #6 – LET THE JACKET DRY ITSELF!
Just like the washing machine, you should never use a dryer on the shearling jacket. Your jacket can catch moisture with all the snowing going on in your area. The first thing is to keep your jacket away from the moisture that sometimes can be impossible (understandable enough!), but using the drier on your jacket would be the biggest mistake. So let your jacket dry itself by keeping it in an airy place. If there is too much water on your jacket, then remove the excess water with a piece of dry cloth, preferably a soft cloth. Do follow these rules while cleaning your Shearling Jackets; it’ll make them last longer!
